What is Acupuncture? Acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely thin needles into your skin at strategic points on your body. Acupuncture originated in China thousands of years ago, but over the past three decades, its popularity has grown significantly within the United States.
How acupuncture works
- Stimulates specific points along the peripheral nervous system (acupuncture points) causing a neurofeedback to the central nervous system (brain) and depending on what acupoints are stimulated, can reset it.
- Strengthens the immune system by increasing T-cell counts. This may be why it work on allergies and chronic fatigue syndrome.
- Releases endorphins – endorphins not only relax the whole body when release, but also regulate serotonin in the brain which plays a big part in our moods.
- Acupuncture needles used are as fine as a human hair. The needles are left in place for 20-30 minutes for adults during which time the patient usually relaxes while soft music plays. In areas where you are especially tight, electrodes may be attached to the needles inducing a steady vibration. This vibration feels like a gentle massage.
