Whiplash injuries are one of the most common injuries that occur after a motor vehicle accident. Whiplash occurs when the head is suddenly thrust forward and backward or side-to-side after the collision. What many people don't realize is whiplash can occur even after very minor auto accidents. It only takes a few miles an hour to create the tremendous forces in the neck that can injure the muscles, tendons and ligaments. Unfortunately, many people involved in minor accidents actually get whiplash, and they don't feel the effects for weeks or months after the injury, so they don't seek immediate help. This tends to prolong the recovery. Also, many people don't realize that neck pain isn't the only symptom of whiplash. If you have noticed headaches, jaw pain, sleeping difficulties or dizziness after an auto collision, you may have whiplash. If you experience any of these symptoms after an auto accident, make sure you talk to Dr. Flaskey immediately because research shows that the sooner whiplash is identified and treated, the greater the potential for recovery.
The diagnosis of whiplash usually starts with the doctor taking an X-ray to make sure there is not serious injury to the neck. Chiropractic adjustments to the neck and upper back, along with stretching and home-strengthening exercises often work quickly to reduce the pain. Electrical muscle stimulation therapy may also be used to relax spasmed muscles, which will aide in the adjustments. Contact us today to see if we can help you!
